London, 1 June 2009.

A few days before taking this self portrait I was told that an x-ray revealed something on my lung and because I used to be a smoker my GP advised that there was a possibility that I might have cancer. Panic! A week later I saw a Dr in the chest clinic at the Whittington Hospital and he allayed my fears somewhat by telling me that there was a good chance the shadow was a result of an infection. I had been quite unwell for some weeks (which increased the plausibility of my GP’s prognosis) but he advised that the symptoms suggested an infection and referred me for a scan to investigate.

Last week I’m thankful to say he informed me that the scan supported his view and did not reveal anything worse. He recommended another scan in three months time to make sure. You can imagine I am mighty relieved! I have also been feeling much much better for about ten days and hopefully whatever it was is now over. I have to say I received a terrific service by the much maligned National Health Service and I’m extremely grateful for all the attention and professional help I received – completely free of charge! We are very fortunate here in the UK.
